Korea has a vast history that extends from 4000 B.C to the present day. Today Korea is known as one of the leading countries in education and technology, but in its 5,000 year history the Korean people have suffered a lot of the hand of others with over 900 invasions at the hands of outside people. The earliest Korean settlers were the Tungusic tribes from the Altai Mountain Region in Central Asia who made the peninsula their home in 4000 B.C ( Neolithic Period). The tribes brought with them their religious, and cultural beliefs, and practices (Shamanism). As time passed by the Fourth Century B.C. town’s states had risen and were large enough for China to recognize them. The most advanced of the towns was named Old Chosen (Pyongyang) which was invaded by china in the Third Century B.C. and was ruled by the China for 400 years.
The first period of Korean Reported History is called the Period of the Three Kingdoms (53 B.C – 668 A.D) by historians. The three kingdoms were Koguryo, Paekche, and Silla. By the end of the Seventh Century Silla conquered Koguryo and Paekche and united the peninsula under the Silla Dynasty. During the Silla Dynasty Korea made great advances in literature, art, and science. Buddhism which was introduce by the Chinese was used by the people in the Silla Dynasty, and by the mid-eight century the Silla people began using woodblock printing to write.
In the 900, the three kingdoms divided ones more with Koguryo Dynasty now in control. Koguryo reigned for 400 years and achieved many advances in art, science, and literature. During the Koguryo Dynasty many of the knowledge left behind by the Chinese were improved for example the printing methods, and medical knowledge. Koguryo ruled until 1231 when Mongolian forces invaded and ruled until 1368.
It was not until the fall of the Yi Dynasty in 1592 when Japan invaded the Peninsula. After Korea took control from Japan, and was ones again attacked in 1627 and 1632 by the Manchus. As time passed Western Science, technology, and religion began influencing Korea through China. During this period France, Great Britain, and the United States began dominating areas in China and other Asian Countries causing Korea to create a closed-door policy towards non-Chinese foreigners, because of this Korea was dubbed The Hermit Kingdom.
From 1894-1895 Japan and China fought for control of Asia. With the Japans victory they invaded the Korea peninsula and began to take advantage of the Korean Citizens and outlawed Korean customs. Korea then turned to Russia for help which started the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905. With the victory of the Japanese the U.S President Theodore Roosevelt created the Treaty of Portsmouth causing Japan to officially annex the country in 1910.
During its 35 years under the Japanese colony, Korea made major Economic and social developments. Some examples were soil improvements, updated farming methods, and industrialization. Still even with the treaty Japan robbed Korea of their rice crops and kicked farmers of their land and took complete control of the schools and temples. Korea continued to suffer at the hands of the Japanese until August 15, 1945. Their fight then continue against North Korea and has yet to reach an end.
